New York House

Kirkgate, Leeds

New York House was acquired by property company Rushbond in late 2016.

The building is situated in the Kirkgate neighbourhood, home to some of Leeds’ creative and independent companies. Rushbond have recently announced new plans for the area, which includes a new programme of investment and activities at the Corn Exchange as well as the reinvigoration of the First White Cloth Hall.

New York House is located on New York Street next to the original I.J. Dewhirst Ltd. drapery suppliers building – with its historical ties to Michael Marks and Tom Spencer, co-founders of Marks & Spencer. The building was a chosen canvas for the project ‘A City Less Grey’ – an innovative urban joint arts project between Leeds BID and East Street Arts and supported by Rushbond. It received national recognition and this mural titled ‘Common Ground’ by Mike Winnard was completed in 2018.
